How to lose belly fat? This is a question I get at least once a week from my clients and potential clients that is worried about their waists. It is understandable, it is the first thing anyone thinks of when they want to start a diet. Follow these tips and we will get you down some pant sizes and help you lose belly fat!
Understanding Belly Fat
Belly fat is dangerous! Belly fat causes insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, PCOS, and many other risks. This type of fat is typically harder to get rid of also! While muscle burns calories at rest, fat does almost nothing at rest. It just hangs out (get it?). Belly fat is made up of two types of fat, subcutaneous fat that you can pinch, and visceral fat that hangs out with your organs. Everyone has visceral fat, but it can become dangerous when you have too much visceral and subcutaneous fat. Both types of fat we will try to eliminate.
How to Lose Belly Fat
The goal today is to give you healthy tips in eliminating belly fat. We will work on toning and eradicating belly fat from a two step approach: dieting and exercising. Unfortunately we know spot reduction fat loss doesn’t work. Fat doesn’t disappear proportionately to what you train, in other words you can’t do sit-ups and expect your stomach fat to disappear. The burning of fat will happen throughout the body, and you may lose it in other areas before your belly.
Understand first and foremost: Diet is 95% of the equation.
- Let your housemates/significant other know you are are trying to change your lifestyle
- Throw away the junk food
- Increase water intake to 100+ ounces a day
- Water helps increase metabolism, helps control appetite, and helps with overall health.
- Try to eat 100+ grams of protein a day
- Try to limit/eliminate simple sugars (sodas, sugar, white bread, white rice, instant carbs)
- Stick to whole grain carbs
- Eliminate high sodium foods (TV dinners, hot dogs, deli meats)

You need to burn fat: Exercise will help!
- Be active/In the gym at least 4 days a week

Will Supplements and Wraps Help Me Lose Belly Fat?
Wraps may tighten the skin temporarily but there is no proof that it will help you lose fat. Depending on the supplements, there are some supplements I do recommend to help you with losing belly fat.
